J’ai passé un bon mois d’août, chaud mais plutôt reposant quand même, qui m’a permis de cesser de réfléchir et de vraiment me reposer, après quatre mois d’errance (et dix ans de carrière). C’était cool, alors je vais continuer un peu.
Beaucoup de réflexions sur le blogging ces dernières semaines, et sur les limites de « be the change you want to be in the world ». Je me suis rendu compte que ma liste de « trucs que je voudrais faire dans ma vie » est, dans sa très grande majorité, une liste de « trucs que je voudrais avoir dans ma vie ». Je ne serai donc pas propriétaire d’un bar consacré aux sports féminins et sports d’hiver à Grenoble, parce que ce n’est pas du tout ce que je veux faire ; j’aimerais juste qu’il y en ait un. Et quand j’y pense, je ne veux pas administrer Wikimédia France, je veux que l’association existe ; je ne veux pas créer une équipe d’arbitrage pour mon club de roller derby, je veux pouvoir arbitrer sans jouer. Il faut que j’apprenne ce que je veux, et ce que je vais faire pour l’avoir. En l’occurrence, si quelqu’un ouvre un bar sportif à Grenoble, j’irai ; mon mandat à Wikimédia France, je l’ai fait et je ne regrette pas ; j’ai proposé un créneau d’entraînement pour un collectif d’arbitrage, que je rejoindrai si le club décide de le mettre en place. Ce n’est pas à moi d’être le changement que je veux voir dans le monde quitte à en perdre toutes mes ressources intérieures et extérieures. C’est à moi de le soutenir, dans la mesure de mes moyens.
Sur le blogging, rien à voir, mais je trouve que mon blog n’est pas très joli et ça m’agace. Et puis il n’est pas structuré. Et puis je n’écris pas assez dessus. Et puis, et puis, et puis. Je veux un monde avec plein de blogs où on lit plein de gens qui parlent plein de choses. Ma place dans ce monde que je veux, c’est d’avoir un blog où je parle de plein de choses. Alors voilà, aujourd’hui j’écris, et demain peut-être que j’écrirai, et je vais remplir mon tout petit devoir au milieu de tout ça. Et ça commence par ce récap du mois d’août, écrit alors que je suis d’humeur un peu salée mais globalement content de mon mois quand même, et son renommage : Collection. C’est comme Recommendations / Recommandations, mon ancien titre, mais c’est le même mot dans les deux langues (pas tout à fait le même sens, mais les deux sens me plaisent), et puis c’est joli et moins administratif et allez hop !

- Lev AC Rosen published a fourth Evander Mills queer thriller, Mirage City. It has internalized homophobia, self-loathing, a gay biker gang, and homophobic torture, all that in 1950s Los Angeles. Gripping and dark as always.
- I thought Keeper of enchanted rooms would be cozy fantasy, like A witch’s magical guide to innkeeping or House of Frank or Violet Thistlewaite is not a villain anymore − and as I type this I realise the surprising volume of novels that follow someone who starts working at a magical house. Huh. It’s darker than all of these, closer possibly to Gotico salentino, although of course it has a cute romance plot; I’m excited to read what comes next from Charlie N. Holmberg.

- I’m not sure I liked W. David Marx’s Blank Space: a cultural history of the twenty-first century. I feel like what should be a conclusion is in fact the foundation of the book: 21st century culture sucks because we’ve gotten rid of specialization and conflated popularity with success. Once in a while, the author mentions something that I just don’t feel should be a negative, or that even contradicts this premise, and has to shoehorn it into his book to make it fit his purpose. Otherwise, I do think many of the observations are astute and probably correct, and I did enjoy the (very short) conclusion that suggests some improvements.
- The Other Olympians: fascism, queerness, and the making of modern sports. My friend Siddharth gave me this one a couple of years ago (…that’s what I get for reading my paper books in their order of acquisition) and I’ve finally gotten to it, and it’s really excellent! Brilliant, full of individual stories and general observations, a perfect mix between the history of the Olympics, of women’s sports, and of trans and intersex people in the 1930s, especially in Europe. A must-read for anyone interested in any of these topics.

- J’ai relu, après une bonne quinzaine d’années, Le cercle littéraire des amateurs d’épluchures de patates par Annie Barrows et Mary Ann Shaffer. C’était bien mieux que dans mes souvenirs, qui étaient déjà très positifs.
- Je n’avais pas réussi à accrocher, il y a quelques années, à Manhunt de Gretchen Felker-Martin. Ensuite, j’avais aimé Black Flame de la même autrice. Cette fois, j’ai décidé de retenter ma chance, mais en français, et Chasse à l’homme a ses défauts, mais reste un très bon bouquin d’horreur qui sort des sentiers battus, qui sont pourtant gigantesques quand on parle d’apocalypse zombie aux États-Unis.

- Politiser le bien-être de Camille Teste, dont je parle en détail sur le blog.
In italiano
- La vita a rovescio, Simona Baldelli. I’m not going to pretend I can write a book review in italian ; this book was a bit tough for me to read because of its word choices (and also because my Italian classes did not teach me to read graphic sex scenes), but the topic (a lesbian woman who dresses up as a man in the 18th century) was very well covered. I think that the author really chooses the approach of the cross-dressing lesbian, which is fair; she could also have chosen to make the protagonist a trans man, and she didn’t, which she is allowed to do. This is based on a true story.

- Le voyage de Clem de Vitry-le-François à Munich à vélo en juillet-août. J’adore lire son blog, et je me suis fait cambrioler ma cave et voler mon vélo donc là c’est purement théorique mais l’été prochain, je voudrais faire une longue balade de cyclotourisme en France. Dès que j’arriverai à dépasser les 50 kilomètres par semaine sans chargement, quoi.

What I’ve listened to / Audio
Le port USB-C de mon téléphone est mort, et je vais recevoir le nouveau d’ici quelques jours, mais tant qu’il me faut plus d’une heure pour retrouver 2% de batterie, je vais éviter d’aller voir mon historique (peu fourni par ailleurs) de podcasts. Rendez-vous le mois prochain !
