My employment at Hyli ended on May 20.
It’s bittersweet news: layoffs are never fun, but I get great unemployment support and I want to use this opportunity to get out of the burnout spiral of the past few years by finally taking a real break, then take the plunge and go freelance as a content strategy consultant. 12 years after my previous (and first) freelancing experience, this is terrifying and exhilarating and I can’t wait to get started! The biggest effort right now will be to get some rest, not to start working − let’s see how that goes.

- Fiction
- The Uncommon Reader, by Alan Bennett, was fun and sweet. I read it where it should be read: at the beach.
- Elisabeth Cohen’s The Glitch is not extraordinary, but it’s very fun and I was especially amused by its satire (or is it?) of tech startup life.
- I went on a « tradwife thriller » bender, with Caro Claire Burke’s Yesteryear and Jo Piazza’s Everyone is lying to you both conquering my heart.
- I was fascinated by Butter, by Asako Yuzuki. It caused a week-long spree of eating butter and soy sauce rice, which tastes amazing but is probably not the must nutrient-rich. Also, as far as I’m concerned, every female character is a lesbian icon, no matter how much the author tries to convince us they’re heterosexual.
- A good mystery with This story might save your life by Tiffany Crum.

- L’amour à temps, de Martin Winckler, est un roman historique avec un voyage temporel qui n’a jamais aussi peu ressemblé à du fantastique. J’ai beaucoup aimé ma lecture, malgré quelques tics de langage parfois pesants.

- Jean-Laurent Cassely ne m’a pas appris grand-chose dans La révolte des premiers de la classe, mais ça a quand même fait du bien à lire.

Je m’attendais à voir un gentil navet avec Juste une illusion, et j’ai adoré chaque moment du film. Le prix à payer, c’est d’avoir du Cabrel coincé dans la tête depuis trois semaines. Ça vaut le coup, essentiellement parce que j’ai déjà du Cabrel coincé dans la tête régulièrement.
(Accessoirement, ça rejoint bien le post partagé plus haut sur la Gen X européenne ; je ne suis pas Gen X, mais je reconnais bien mieux le monde de ce film, ou les années 1990 de Derry Girls, que les références incessantes de Stranger Things par exemple.)

- Been enjoying Bad Therapist more and more with their Wilhelm Reich and their neuro-linguistic programming episodes. I feel like they’re becoming my new If books could kill, now that I feel their quality has really dropped.
- Blair Braverman’s brand-new podcast, What to carry, what to burn, started with a great story of Ada Blackjack’s Arctic survival in two episodes.
- 60 songs that explain the ’90s keeps on delivering with a new episode on Shakira’s Hips don’t lie.

- Dans À suivre, ARTE Radio a sorti une série en six épisodes, « Rose, daronne de la drogue ».
- Sur Méta de choc, Willy Mangin nous parle des croyances dans le sport et en particulier dans les arts martiaux asiatiques. (C’est une série en six épisodes ; n’ayant écouté que le premier, je ne recommande que celui-ci !)
What I’ve played / Jeux
Je continue à poncer Animal Crossing et Stardew Valley, comme il se doit pour une fin de printemps ensoleillée et chômée.
En dehors de ça, je m’épuise sur un puzzle « carte du monde » en 5000 pièces. C’était très cool, mais là il reste les océans et j’ai peur.
Where I’ve been / Lieux
Un week-end à Autrans, au camping dont j’avais déjà parlé et qui est toujours aussi bien, et un week-end à Marseille pour arbitrer le championnat de troisième division de roller derby (et profiter de la plage, un peu). Les deux étaient super, le premier reposant et le deuxième stimulant !
Pour Marseille, c’était aussi et surtout la première fois que j’étais officiel sur une compétition et pas des matchs amicaux. J’étais stressé… et en fait, c’était bien plus facile qu’un amical avec une organisation un poil plus à l’arrache. La saison se termine sur ce week-end, et j’ai hâte de reprendre en septembre !
