Today, let’s talk about a brand new lady!
In a world. Where trans people are played by trans people. Cis people are played by trans people. And gay people are played by gay people. And where trans people belong in high schools…
As in, two boys decide to pretend to be trans to gain access to hot girls in their high school, except that one of them pretty much immediately realizes that, well, she actually is trans.
Hijinks ensue, and it’s a beautiful mix of camp and hilarious (no, I never grew out of my high school comedy phase and yes, my last rewatch of Not Another Teen Movie (aptly named Sex Academy in French) was embarrassingly recent), and of some more heartfelt scenes with a mother who struggles with her daughter’s coming out and with the sheer power of the emotions portrayed by Misha Osherovich when her character feels gender euphoria for the first time. Also, somehow, nobody ever gets misgendered even when people act in transphobic ways.
It was a gorgeous, completely stupid movie, in which the transphobic trope of men pretending to be trans women to attack them in their locker room is parodied masterfully, with good ole disgusting tampons involved because yes! This is a high school comedy and it will involve used tampons!

I’m really shocked that this movie was barely covered by Autostraddle when they love Bottoms so much − a movie that is clearly in the same vein, but not nearly as good if you ask me. Autostraddle only reviewed the trailer! What the hell?
Anyway, this is Siobhan McCarthy’s first movie and given how amazing it is, I hope to see many more.
This was played in Grenoble for the queer Vues d’en face film festival, with fansubs by the festival team. We were told that it was the first-ever international release of this gorgeous gem, which is absolutely shocking.
Watch it if you can find it!
