I read An unauthorized fan treatise (which took me ages to export to a clean epub for my e-reader). I hadn’t realised that Last Seen Online included the fan treatise, and when I finally decided to give it a go, it seemed that the only ebook version was for sale on Amazon, so that’s unfortunately not going to happen.
There’s a lot that I really loved about this book − the format was great, the comments had me howling pretty often with my cringiest 2012 memories (there are some Doctor Who, The Vampire Diaries, and The Hunger Games Tumblrs out there that I may or may not have created; fortunately, I’ve never fallen into real-person fic territory or even actor speculation, I much prefer fiction, thank you).
Now, as much as I loved the format, a lot of the story had me unconvinced. Some was explained, rather hurriedly, at the end of the book, but I don’t know… I guess unreliable narrators are just not my cup of tea, as I really struggle to piece things together, and even when things were (might have been?) explained at the end, it didn’t feel satisfying, maybe because I couldn’t trust the ending either.
Also, the romantic subplot should have been resolved with hilarious comments when revealed, instead of people having moved to the criminal affair. I was robbed of my fun!!!
All in all, an enjoyable read, I just really am not into unreliable narrators. See, I’d have loved to read this book from the perspective of someone reading the blog and trying to find out what actually happened… well, I guess that’s exactly what Last Seen Online is about. Ahh, wish I could buy and read it. Guess my dear old friend Anna will have to lend it to me, she has a wonderful archive.
