The enshittification of the web… in 2012

Liked The Web We Lost by Anil DashAnil Dash (Anil Dash)

The tech industry and its press have treated the rise of billion-scale social networks and ubiquitous smartphone apps as an unadulterated win for regular people, a triumph of usability and empowerment. They seldom talk about what we’ve lost along the way in this transition, and I find that younger folks may not even know how the web used to be.

Devastatia (NSFW website) shared this post that really made me smile. She found this 2012 post by Anil Dash called The Web We Lost. Although I had been blogging since middle school, I bought my first domain name in 2012 (actually, two of them: the personal one (Internet Archive didn’t keep the design, sad times)…

The Challenge
A few days ago, I remarked the following to a community of which I am a member: « I need to do or learn something new. » This sentence codifies a feeling of unease about not having a novel challenge that I have had recently.
While I love doing new things, I often stay within the same com…

and it makes me very happy. btw, citation hunt works in french too. i had never thought of using it as a tool to get people to make their first edits − it’s very smart!

subtitle hell

Replied to this is the title of a blog post by Jess Driscoll (jess is typing)

I don’t remember when I started adding alt text to photos. That’s not to say I’ve been doing it for soooo long. Back in my hand-coded HTML days, it wasn’t a regular practice. It’s only been in the last ten years (perhaps less?) that adding alt text has become the polite thing–and then the right thing—to do online. I just don’t remember when or why I started.

What I know for sure is that I was inspired by someone else. Someone wrote about the benefits of alt text. Someone showed us how to add it

excellent post. however, to the point: As I’m planning to make video content again, I’m thinking about whether I want to add hardcoded captions. No! No you don’t!! Find a hosting provider that allows you to have a separate .srt file for subtitles. NEVER burn them into the video EVER. Some of us need to…

Evil Author Day is a great idea

Liked Have the Delete Your Drafts Day for Our Blogs, but also Evil Author Day by Sara Jakša (Sara Jakša)

And then I remembered about the Evil Author day. It is celebrated in some parts of the fanfiction community on the 15th of February. On this day people can post their unfinished stories and probably also other art, with full intention to never finish this.
I…

I love the idea of Evil Author Day! It would be much more satisfying than Delete Your Drafts day. Looking forward to offloading some stuff next February 15, and thanks for sharing, Sara!

Imagine a conference without blood loss

Replied to What does my Menstruation has Against Conferences? by Sara Jakša (sarajaksa.eu)

This is a rant
I am currently on my first day of the PyCon Slovakia. And I had not be able to take the full advantage of this because of menstrual pain.
Usually on the first and last strong day of the menstruation, I get some pain. How big it is and how many hours it lasts depends on multiple factor…

I know, right??? Menstruation happens for about one week out of four. Ovulation is another couple of tough days somewhere in the middle. And yet everytime we have a conference or really cool event we’re on our periods and can’t make the most of them. It’s statistically impossible AND YET I believe there is a…
